My Story
Kathartic is a play on my maiden name, Katherine Hart. I love crafting and find it very cathartic. Normally I'm a happy, positive and relaxed person. Like most people though, I need a release sometimes. That's where creating comes in, it's my happy place.
Ever since I can remember I've always had various crafts as hobbies and my bedroom was always covered in needles and thread, ribbons, glue, paper, paints and pens etc... I grew up in the north east of England and as a child I was a bit of a tomboy. My friends and I would build dens at the marsh and then we would spend hours hiding in them, making corn dollies, weaving reeds or crochet granny squares.
This love of anything craft related has continued to grow and I love learning new skills and experimenting with different media types.
While working full time crafting ended up just being the odd Christmas card making session, DIY essentials and IKEA flat pack assembly. Then we started a family...
My previous life revolved around tech and innovation and this has melded into my crafting with the use of digital design which I use to create personalised items and to design my woodworking projects.
I honestly thought I'd be straight back to work after having my first baby, the second one came 16 months later so no chance there! Instead I realised how much I enjoyed being a mummy and, I want to be a part of my boys lives while they're young. My husband is self employed and mostly works from home so we have a great life balance. He can work around the family needs which is wonderful, we're very lucky!
Now my children are at school I've been able to spend time setting up my workshop. It's taken years to move everything out of the garage so that I can have my own space, it's been worth every second of effort. It's still evolving as I hope it will for many years to come.

Life can sometimes get in the way of me staying in my happy place. A few years ago my very much loved stepdad died of cancer and threw my world apart. I was given some great advice, "Keep your hands busy" so I did.
It was my stepdad who got me into DIY and woodworking. I was brought up with the attitude that you can do anything you put your mind to. So I built a pergola, an outdoor kitchen with pizza oven, a bookcase, a summer house, a handmade cabinet, the list goes on...
I was lucky enough to be left some of his tools, including a large bandsaw, a Tormek, and an amazing lathe. It took me 18 months to have the courage to take off his last piece of turning off that was still chucked up, it was emotional. The joy that it has given me since is immeasurable, turning is the ultimate therapy!
I'm still making and I have no plans to stop!
